My weekend pancake tradition lends itself well to slow-breakfast sketching…

I’m trying out a new sketchbook that has a unique feature: it tells you what to sketch. Here is an example of some of the suggestions: your least favourite food, a fainting goat, the leaning tower of Pisa, wise babies…

Here are some pictures from my most recent day in the studio. An elaborate, crafty valentine was the result. You don’t get to see it though, only my valentine does.

And for those of you in New Brunswick, Canada, go to the Sweetest Little Thing tonight and place a bid in the auction of some beautiful art! I didn’t donate a piece this year, and I sorely regret not making the time to do so. It is a fabulous event to raise money for Struts Gallery and the Owens Art Gallery.

Have a lovely day lovers.

Sometimes the table gets a little out of hand...

This is an animation I did a few years back with audio I created today. Enjoy!

Here is a postcard I made recently to accompany a residency application to Elsewhere in Greensboro, NC. Check it out, it looks like a fabulous place. Oh, and wish me luck!

Here is the front of my postcard:

This flower brightened up the drudgery of grocery shopping for me today. I saw it behind the glass in the flower section on my way to produce and it stopped me in my tracks. I paused, leaning on the handle of my shopping cart and just admired it for a while. I thought about how the center of my wedding bouquet was also a Gerbera daisy. After a few moments I snapped out of it and took two more steps towards the produce section but paused again and looked back. Then there was an audible sigh. Then I walked back, plucked the peach flower from the vase of Gerberas, laid it on top of my carton of organic eggs and carried on my merry way.

And for those of you who know me, it was also a unique day in that I felt extra zing and actually bought a bottle of grey/brown/purple nail polish (pictured here). That makes two non-essentials in one shopping trip! What extravagance!

What simple joy.

To commemorate the very last day of summer I thought I’d post a summer-dinner painting.

Here is a table spread our friends laid for us one summer evening in their Toronto backyard… fond memories of the evening still linger.

Stay tuned for another summer meal post tomorrow!

I haven’t posted in a while but there are plenty of new works (and some old ones too) posted on my website! Go check it out. I’ve added some new galleries as well as some new works to some of the existing galleries.

Below is a snapshot of my new “Commissions” gallery on my website.

I do many pet portraits, house and property portraits and any other sentimental still life or landscapes you can think of. The majority of the commissions I do are for friends or family of the purchaser. They make great thoughtful gifts.

I’ve decided to try and refrain from painting on weekends to give my body a rest. I will share with you on those few days a week my more elementary practice of sketching. You’ll see more experiments, more works in progress and more simple observance or records of the life around me…

graphite sketch of bagel and coffee at the do drop in

Blueberry Bagel at the Do Drop In, graphite in sketchbook

This first sketch is a true testament to my dedication. You cannot imagine how much I wanted to scarf the remainder of this blueberry bagel with cream cheese. But I resisted… just long enough to record it and then it was gone. Inhaled like kibble at a labrador’s schnoz.

This is the exterior of the cafe where said blueberry bagel was consumed with gusto. If it seems a little hastily recorded, it is because the morning was quickly heating up and I was eager to retreat to the air conditioning and rest my eyes from the bright sun of a New Mexico morning.

Waiting for a sandwich, graphite in sketchbook

This light sketch was done in just a few minutes when this man grabbed a paper and sat down to wait for his sandwich “to go”.
